MAN ABOUT TOWN LOS ANGELES: IRIS: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD OF CINEMA

IRIS: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD OF CINEMA

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL

KODAK THEATER

NOW PLAYING

This new production from Cirque du Soleil is a lyrical, fanciful, kinetic foray into the seventh art. Bringing together dance, acrobatics, live video, filmed sequences and animation, the show takes spectators on a fantastic voyage through the history of cinema and its genres, taking them into the heart of the movie-making process.

From illustration to animation, black and white to color, silent films to talkies, fixed shots to swooping camera movements, spectators witness the poetic construction/deconstruction of this art as an object and as a way of transcending reality.

PARKING:  Parking is available for $10:00 at the Hollywood & Highland Parking Complex.

THE GOOD:  The first act is visually stunning. You will be blown away by the ability of the performers and their death defying feats.  Add to that the live video, animation and filmed sequences and you have officially been taken to a new level.

Enjoy it while it lasts because the second act tries to be more than it is and the show suffers.

You will leave feeling like you missed something; especially, if you have bought into all of the hype. It really wasn’t much of a journey… or a world… of cinema.

Unfortunately, if you have seen one CIRQUE DU SOLEIL show, you have pretty much seen them all.

If you have never seen a CIRQUE DU SOLEIL show, and have money to burn, then I would recommend it.

THE BAD:  High ticket prices + bad economy= a lot of empty seats

THE UGLY:  Entering the theater is easy; Exiting is another matter.  Remember to practice patience when the show is over.

MY SCORE:  ***
(3 OUT OF 5 STARS)
