[ALBUM REVIEW] TEGAN AND SARA - HEARTTHROB
I often get really excited to hear a new album from artists/bands that I love. But rarely do my anticipations ever meet my expectations, until I heard Heartthrob, out today! Tegan and Sara began recording their seventh studio album last year and released their first single, Closer, back in September. We included that song on a Hump Day Mix as soon as it came out. It would later get the coveted slot on my Fall Into Winter 2012 Dance mix.
Heartthrob is filled with 80's synth-pop infused with early 90's influences and the production value of 2013. The album has songs about relationships, heartaches, break ups, redemption, empowerment and most importantly, an optimistic view on love. I hope Tegan and Sara will take it as a compliment when I say it's a solid pop album from beginning to end. Even though they may be categorized as an indie act, this album couldn't be more mainstream. Released through Warner, the PR team did a great job promoting this album by placing exclusive tracks on awesome music sites such as Stereogum and SPIN, fashion magazines sites like Glamour and Vanity Fair, and interviews with Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) on Idolator and Cory Monteith (Glee) on Entertaiment Weekly. Tegan and Sara will even be playing at Coachella this year on Friday, April 12 & 19! Hopefully they'll be reaching out to SugarBang for an exclusive on their eight studio album! Ok, onto the review...
Heartthrob starts off with a lead single Closer to get you right from the get go. The song is followed by another upbeat track Goodbye, Goodbye. The third song I Was A Fool takes you on a slower turn but considerably one of the strongest songs. I think what the girls are saying is that it's about realizing how far we let something go on before admitting the truth to ourselves. The album returns to more upbeat songs in I'm Not Your Hero and Drive Me Wild. The 80's synth-indie-pop sound in How Come You Don't Want Me sounds a little like Black Light Dinner Party's Older Together which is a great song! I think Love They Say sounds like a great track on Tegan and Sara's album but I can hear Wilson Philips releasing a song similar to that. The following songs Now I'm All Messed Up and my personal favorite Shock To Your System oozes out so much Charli XCX that she'd be proud to have had that song on her own album. Heartthrob is a must have to add to your Best Albums of 2013 collection. Stream it here!
